OpenFront Doomsday Clock
A rising land-share test after ten minutes of grace — not a battle-royale circle.
Doomsday Clock is the v33 mode that ends stalled OpenFront matches by forcing every non-leading side to hold a rising share of usable land. It is not a shrinking safe circle that walks toward the geographic center. If you camp a pretty corner and wait for the zone, you will lose. The v33 notes list what shipped; this page is how to play the clock once it is in the lobby.
Read How to Play first if you still need the ordinary ~80% win line and FFA Overtime. Doomsday is a second land-share test that starts after a 10-minute grace on every speed preset. Overtime (public FFA now defaults it on) can still lower the classic 80% bar after minute 30. They are different tools. Doomsday deletes stalled sides. Overtime lets a leader close a long FFA.
What the clock actually measures
After grace, the required territory share climbs in waves. FFA rungs: 2% / 4% / 7% / 11% / 17% / 25% / 35%. Teams are judged on combined territory against 3% / 6% / 10% / 15% / 21% / 28% / 35%. The team bar is not multiplied by squad size; the middle rungs are simply higher than FFA. A Duo that splits continents fails the same test as a solo player who hid in Greenland.
A doomed side gets a warning (about 30 seconds in community write-ups of the current family), then troop and warship drain. Drain floors around 5% of max instead of wiping the army to zero; doomed warships keep patrol instead of idling at Ports. Territory then rots toward zero and can eliminate the side if you never recover the share. You can still fight, trade, and nuke while doomed. You cannot ignore the share.
The clock does not care that you have the prettiest SAM net. It cares that you own enough non-fallout land. A MIRV that deletes your own cheap tiles can push you under the next rung. Read Nukes before you “help” the clock with fallout.
How to play the grace window
Ten minutes is not “do nothing.” It is the only window where the old opening still works. Spawn plains plus a coast, hold the 42% troop curve, annex Bots, City then Port — the Getting Started script. The difference: you must finish a connected core before wave one. A pretty island with no second land is a grace trap. A mountain pocket that looks safe is a share deficit.
Use the minutes to:
- Own one compact land mass you can still see without panning.
- Put the first City where the troop bar actually tops out.
- Put a Port only if that water has a job (trade or a landing you can answer). Naval is the water chapter; do not buy a navy instead of land share.
- Leave a troop reserve. A doomed drain on an empty bar is how grace heroes die in minute eleven.
If the lobby is teams, spawn on the flashing teammate ring. Combined share is the only number the clock reads. Team Games covers frontliner versus backliner; on Doomsday, the backliner is also a land farmer. Someone has to take cheap tiles during a warning while someone else holds the front.
When a warning appears
Name the state in three words: secure, screened, or leaving.
Secure means you are above the next rung with a connected reserve. Keep playing the match. Do not panic-buy a Silo.
Screened means you are near the line. Stop vanity attacks. Take the cheapest adjacent land that is still yours to claim — empty plains, a leftover Bot, a neighbor who is already doomed. A Defense Post on a neck you will keep is fine; a Defense Post on land you are about to abandon is 50,000 gold you needed for a City. Buildings is the purchase order; the clock does not change the prices, only the deadline.
Leaving means the water or the pocket cannot recover. Stop adding Ports and warships. Retreat to the smallest coherent land you can still defend. Transports that grab an immediate tile beat a Warship that looks busy. The clock counts land, not hulls.
Do not empty the army to paint tiles during a warning if a human is already at the border. A doomed drain plus a real attack is a wipe. Drop the attack slider, take one cheap direction, and ask an ally for troops if you are in a team lobby. Alliances still apply in FFA: a five-minute pact can buy the land you need, and a betrayal during your own warning is how people throw games.
Teams, Ranked, and Compact maps
Ranked 2v2 is a different queue (1 minute spawn immunity, Compact maps 50% of the time). Doomsday can still be selected in specials and private lobbies. On Compact maps the share percentages hurt faster because there is less junk land. Spawn together on one edge. Do not “cover both sides of the map.”
Clan tags still clump teammates. If your partner is a stranger, pick a job in chat before minute ten: who farms the cheap side, who holds the contested neck. A team that both frontlines will miss the 3% rung while looking busy.
What Doomsday does not replace
You still need gold, Cities, and a plan for nukes. The clock is a filter on stalling, not a new win condition that ignores 80% in other modes. Public FFA without the clock still uses Overtime after minute 30. Human vs Nations and private lobbies can turn the clock off. Check the lobby card before you memorize a wave table.
Maps with impassable terrain (several v33 boards) change which cheap land is even reachable. File map archetypes on the maps tier list. Sol, Las Vegas Strip, and skinny coastal maps punish players who treat Doomsday like a center-circle BR.
Practice the grace opening twice in a private lobby with the clock on before you queue a public special. The Guides Hub is the rest of the tutorial set. The gold costs tool stays useful because a City during a warning is often the correct purchase, and a Silo is often not.
Play the clock as a share exam. Hold connected land, spend the warning on cheap tiles, and keep a reserve that survives the drain. That is the whole mode.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common OpenFront questions.
Is Doomsday Clock a shrinking circle?
No. It is a rising required land-share after a 10-minute grace. Camping a corner does not save you. See the FFA and team wave tables on this page.
What are the FFA Doomsday waves?
After grace: 2%, 4%, 7%, 11%, 17%, 25%, then 35% of usable land. Teams use a higher combined ladder that still caps at 35%.
Can the clock eliminate me by itself?
Yes if you stay under the share. Drain floors near 5% of max, then territory rot can delete the side. Recover land during the warning; do not wait for the skull to vanish.
Does Doomsday replace the 80% win?
No. Other modes still use ~80% non-fallout land, and FFA Overtime can lower that bar after minute 30. Doomsday is an extra share test in lobbies that enable it.
What should I build when I am doomed?
Cheap connected land and a City if the troop cap is the bottleneck. Skip a Silo unless you already have ammo and a target. Buildings has the full timing.
