OpenFront Overtime
Public FFA now defaults Overtime on. The 80% bar starts falling after minute 30.
Overtime is the FFA anti-stalemate clock. It is not Doomsday Clock. Doomsday is a rising land-share test after ten minutes of grace; Overtime waits until minute 30, then lowers the ordinary 80% win line. Mixing them up is how people turtle a pretty 40% pocket and still lose. The full Doomsday rules live on Doomsday Clock. This page is the falling 80% bar.
As of v0.33.13 (3 September 2026), public FFA defaults Overtime on. Team and Special queues do not inherit that default. Private lobbies can still turn it off. Check the lobby card before you memorize a table. The mechanic itself landed in v0.33.11 (24 August 2026). Maintenance notes through v0.33.14 sit on v33 patch notes.
If you still need spawn, the 42% troop curve, and the first City, read Getting Started first. If you need the ordinary win rule without the clock, How to Play is the loop page.
The rule in one screen
Until 30:00 the win line is still 80% of non-fallout land. You win only when your usable-land share is strictly greater than the live threshold. At exactly 30:00 the bar has not moved yet.
Then the threshold drops 1 percentage point every 30 seconds (2 points per minute):
| Match time | Live threshold |
|---|---|
| 30:00 | 80% |
| 30:30 | 79% |
| 35:00 | 70% |
| 40:00 | 60% |
| 45:00 | 50% |
Fallout still removes land from the pool. A Hydrogen Bomb that paints your own cheap tiles can push you under a falling bar you were about to clear. Read Nukes before you “help” Overtime with fallout.
How a leader should play it
If you are already over the live line, stop painting vanity tiles. The next 30-second drop will win the game if you keep the share. Spend gold on Defense Posts on the neck that is actually bleeding, not on a fourth Factory in a dead rail. Keep a troop reserve near 42% of cap so a neighbor cannot take 3% in one click.
Do not empty the army to race 82% when 79% is about to be enough. The attack slider is the same tool as in the opening; Controls has the T/Y keys. Overtime punishes the player who dumps 80% of troops into a mountain Defense Post at 39:40.
Alliances still last about five minutes. A pact that expires at 31:00 is a gift to whoever was waiting on your border. Alliances is the timer page. Let a useless pact expire cleanly rather than betraying into a 30-second half-defense while the bar is falling.
How a chaser should play it
If you are under the line, take the cheapest legal land before the next drop, not the prettiest city cluster. Empty plains, a leftover Bot, a doomed neighbor, a coast you can actually hold. A Port that does not pay before the next 30 seconds is the wrong purchase. Buildings still ranks City as the troop-cap answer when the bar is the bottleneck.
Naval landings matter when the cheap tiles are on another island. Naval covers transports and Warship intercept. Do not fund a second Warship if a transport would grab the 2% you need this half-minute.
If the lobby is Doomsday and Overtime, solve Doomsday first until you are above the Clock’s current wave, then treat Overtime as the late closer. The Clock can delete you at minute 12; Overtime cannot touch you until minute 30.
What Overtime does not do
It does not shrink a circle. It does not change City costs, SAM range, or alliance duration. It does not apply to Team or Special unless the host turns it on. Ranked 1v1 and Ranked 2v2 have their own end conditions; see Ranked.
Public FFA without Overtime (old lobbies, or a private card with it off) still wants ~80% forever. If a streamer is shouting “the bar is 63%,” you are in Overtime. If they are shouting “skull on the leaderboard,” you are in Doomsday. Both can be true in a cursed specials lobby. Read the HUD, not the chat.
Steam Early Access on 17 September 2026 does not change this table. The browser client at openfront.io already runs it. The Updates Hub is the patch index; this page is the endgame click.
Play Overtime as a countdown on the 80% line. Protect a winning share, or steal cheap land before the next 30-second tick. That is the whole mode.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common OpenFront questions.
When does OpenFront Overtime start?
After minute 30. The 80% line has not moved yet at 30:00. Then it drops one point every 30 seconds. Public FFA defaults this on as of v0.33.13.
Is Overtime the same as Doomsday Clock?
No. Doomsday is a rising land-share test after ten minutes of grace. Overtime lowers the classic 80% FFA win line after minute 30. See Doomsday Clock.
Does Overtime apply to team games?
Not by default. v0.33.13 turns it on for public FFA. Team and Special queues do not inherit that default unless the lobby card says so.
How do I win during Overtime?
Hold a usable-land share strictly greater than the live threshold. If you lead, stop overextending. If you chase, take cheap tiles before the next drop.
Where are the patch notes?
v33 patch notes cover v0.33.11 (Overtime added) through v0.33.14 (modal scroll fix). This page is how to play the falling bar.
