v33 Patch Notes

v0.33.0 (31 July 2026) is the largest OpenFront jump in a long time: a new late-game pressure mode, Ranked 2v2, twenty-two maps, impassable terrain, and a MIRV rewrite. This page is the rules breakdown. Store SKUs and the 17 September 2026 client belong on Steam Early Access. The index for both is the Updates Hub.

The web client at openfront.io already runs v33-line builds (0.33.x followed, including replay fixes and public FFA Overtime defaults). If you last played on v32, assume MIRVs, maps, and late FFA tempo all changed.

Doomsday Clock is not a circle

Doomsday Clock is a rising land-share test. It is not a shrinking safe zone painted as a ring.

  • Every speed preset starts with a 10-minute grace period.
  • FFA required share then climbs in waves: 2%, 4%, 7%, 11%, 17%, 25%, 35%.
  • Teams are judged on combined territory against a higher ladder (3 / 6 / 10 / 15 / 21 / 28 / 35%).
  • A doomed side gets a warning, then troop and warship drain with a floor at 5% of max rather than a wipe to zero.
  • Doomed warships stay on patrol instead of idling at ports.

If you hold a pretty 1% pocket behind impassable mountains, the Clock still fails you. Expand legal tiles. This interacts with the ordinary win (~80% non-fallout land) and with FFA Overtime after minute 30: Doomsday punishes too little land early; Overtime punishes a stalled 80% race later. They are different systems. Do not confuse them.

Ranked 2v2

Ranked is no longer 1v1-only.

  • Separate 2v2 ladder tab.
  • Matchmaking prefers clanmates as teammates.
  • Games can end early when a full team is dead or disconnected.
  • PvP spawn immunity is 1 minute.
  • Compact maps appear about 50% of the time in this queue (1v1 compact chance was lowered to 20%).
  • Lobbies that do not fill or fully spawn cancel instead of dumping you into a broken match.

Play it as a team game with a clock: assign navy versus city jobs before spawn. Team games covers lane roles; Ranked is the full queue page; building tiers still ranks City as S for both partners.

22 maps and impassable terrain

Headline v33 maps include Sol, Russia, United States, France, Germany, China, Vietnam, Scandinavia, Las Vegas Strip. Also in that drop: Baltics, Caspian Sea, Crimea, Finger Lakes, Gulf of Guinea, Hecate Strait, Irish Sea, Levant, Tierra del Fuego, Branching Paths, More than Luck, Balkhash, Clearwater Lakes.

They sit beside older boards you already know: World, North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania, Britannia, Japan, Italy, Iceland, Gibraltar, Amazon, Gulf of St Lawrence, NYC, East Asia, Australia, Pangaea, Mars, Pluto, Deglaciated Antarctica.

Impassable terrain lets mappers block tiles entirely. Mountains were always slow; blocked tiles are walls. That changes spawn exits, nuke paths, and which coasts can support an attack. United States and Tierra del Fuego teach the feature. File every name under map archetypes so you do not take a Pangaea Factory plan into Las Vegas Strip (roads as water).

MIRV, SAM, and warship veterancy

MIRV warheads now fly as real nukes: real paths, per-type speeds, SAM intercepts. Silos go on cooldown after a MIRV. First SAM is still 1.5M then 3M; first Atom plan is still 1.75M (1M Silo + 750k Atom); Hydro is still 5M; MIRV is still 25M + 15M × n. The new rule is that a 0-SAM late game is food. Details: nukes and gold costs.

Warships gain veterancy the longer they survive. Costs remain 250k / 500k / up to 1M. A veteran boat is not an excuse to skip Cities.

Other combat-adjacent fixes in the same major: SAM targeting and range, nuke pathing over impassable tiles, piracy disabled when you have no Port in that water, transport-ship targeting, rail network path length, factory ghost radius.

Accounts, names, and social

  • Login with Google, linkable to the account you already have.
  • Account-level usernames with a verified badge; subscribers can show a bare name.
  • Custom tribe names in the store, with boosts and a leaderboard.
  • Anonymous animal names as a lobby setting.
  • Shareable player profiles and clan/game history tabs.

These do not change plains versus mountain combat. They change how you find people after a Ranked 2v2.

Performance and quality of life

On large maps, v33 cut core live memory about 45%, reduced garbage-collection churn about 75%, and dropped late-game frame-time p95 about 65%. Graphics presets, terrain color settings, structure-dot toggles, and a featured-stream panel landed in the same window. Right-click cancels Warship or boat selection instead of always opening the menu. That last point belongs on hotkeys and controls.

Later 0.33.x builds (through at least 0.33.14) restored modal scrolling, set public FFA Overtime to default on, and fixed tribes on the leaderboard plus replay desync. v0.33.12 stopped disconnected stations from blocking every train spawn (Trains). v0.33.13 turned public FFA Overtime on by default (Overtime). Ranked 1v1 versus Ranked 2v2: Ranked. Treat those as maintenance on top of this major, not a new major.

What did not change

City +250k cap per level. City/Port/Factory 125k–1M steps with Port and Factory sharing n. Defense Post 50k–250k, 30 tiles, no stack, destroyed on capture. Alliance about five minutes; betrayal 30 seconds of half defense. Win ~80% non-fallout land. Those facts still hold; do not throw out buildings because Sol looks like a space poster.

If you are here for the store date instead of the patch, switch to Steam Early Access. If you only needed the name of this major, the Updates Hub is the shorter index. For how v33 maps should change spending, stay with map archetypes after you finish this notes page.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common OpenFront questions.

Is Doomsday Clock a shrinking circle?

No. After a 10-minute grace, required land share rises in waves (2 / 4 / 7 / 11 / 17 / 25 / 35% in FFA). Holding a tiny corner does not save you.

Can SAMs shoot down MIRV warheads in v33?

Yes. Warheads fly as real nukes and count as normal SAM targets. The Silo also goes on cooldown after a MIRV. Costs are unchanged: see gold costs.

What is new in Ranked?

A separate 2v2 ladder, clanmate preference, one-minute spawn immunity, about 50% compact maps, and cancels when a side never fills. Full queues: Ranked. Lane roles: team games.

Which v33 maps should I learn first?

Sol for distance, United States for impassable terrain, Las Vegas Strip for roads-as-water, Vietnam for a skinny coastal exam, Scandinavia for a huge regional board. The full filing system is map archetypes.

Does v33 change City or Defense Post prices?

No. City still steps 125k–1M with +250k cap. Posts still step 50k–250k, 30 tiles, no stack, destroyed on capture. The patch changed MIRV flight, maps, Clock, and ranked — not those gold steps.

Where is the Steam client in this article?

It is not. Steam Early Access starts 17 September 2026 and is covered on Steam Early Access. This page is the 31 July 2026 rules patch.
